Naming the Cluster
Named in recognition of the contribution of female IT pioneers like Grace Hopper, the name Grace also provides a relevant and appropriate acronym for Greener Research Computing Environment. Our goal with this replacement is to focus on energy consumption in addition to cluster performance.
The approximate total power consumption (from raw figures from published machine specifications) is 48kW, compared to 40kW for ESCluster. Considering the size of the resource, Grace has 2016 compute cores, while ESCluster has 864 cores, along with improved efficiencies in terms of node power consumption and CPU performance, result in a significant performance per kW improvement - 0.23 TFlops per kW for ESCluster up to 0.42 TFlops per kW for Grace.
We are currently working hard with our partners on testing emerging technologies to further reduce our carbon footprint.
